How Much Hyaluronic Acid Does My Body Need?

Portrait of a mature Fit African American man.Hydration is essential to the proper and healthy functioning of our bodies. We need water to nourish our cells, flush out waste products, lubricate our joints, moisten our eyes, and keep our skin and hair smooth, soft, and young looking.

To help us stay hydrated, our bodies produce a substance called hyaluronic acid (or HA). HA is an organic substance that LOVES water. In fact, each molecule of this mighty miracle can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water! This amazing ability lets HA help our bodies retain the moisture that is so essential to our health.

Without HA, it would be difficult (if not impossible) to adequately hydrate and nourish all the thirsty parts of our bodies. But even with our bodies’ natural production of HA, staying hydrated isn’t always easy. Heat, exercise, poor diet, and the demands of our daily lives often prevent us from getting the life-sustaining hydration we need.

Why is Hyaluronic Acid Vital to Health?

Adding a daily dose of hyaluronic acid to our health and fitness regimen can help:

Support overall body hydration. Our bodies are 70% water. Each and every one of our cells need water to live, thrive, and function as it should. Hyaluronic acid helps assure our cells receive the moisture they need—even when environmental factors and the demands of our lives make staying hydrated difficult.

Support joint health. Like any machine with moving parts, our bodies require lubrication. It minimizes joint friction, decrease wear on bones and ligaments, and, maintain flexibility. Without proper hydration, joints become stiff and more difficult to move. Dietary supplementation with HA helps ensure that our joints have sufficient lubrication to function at their best!

Support skin health. Skin is the human body’s largest organ. It protects us from injury, bacteria, and exposure to toxins. To do this challenging job, our skin must remain supple. When skin cracks due to dryness, it can allow potentially harmful microbes inside the body. Hyaluronic acid helps skin stay moist and acting as a protective barrier. It also assists in the constant support of the renewal of skin cells to keep our complexions looking healthy and young.

Support eye health. The human eye is predominantly a fluid and is sensitive to dryness. Eyes need hydration to see, to clean themselves, and to reduce strain on the tiny muscles that control eye movement and focus. HA helps support eye health by maintaining the hydrated environment our eyes need for strain-free performance.

Research Shows Orally Ingested Hyaluronic Acid Hydrates Your Skin

Fortunately, HA is produced normally within the human body. But when environmental factors and life stress threaten healthful levels of hydration, HA supplementation can help. A 2014 study by Kawada and colleagues [1], published in  the Nutrition Journal, showed that orally ingested HA helped moisturize dry skin among study participants.
